Where the numbers come from

Nobody keeps a national database of everyday sprint times, so each rating here is tied to a specific published group of runners. Your rating means the most when you know who was in that group.

  • For ages 8 to 18 we used the 2025 AAU Junior Olympic Games. We took every first-round time in the 100m, 200m and 400m (between 66 and 97 runners per age group and sex) and computed the median, the deciles and the winning time. Athletes qualify for this meet, so it is a national-level field and faster than children in general. AAU groups ages by birth year, and 15–16 and 17–18 race together. Some 100m and 200m races were wind-aided.
  • For non-athletes we used a 2025 study that timed 117 German boys from local schools, grouped from under-12 to under-20, over 100m with a laser from a standing start. It is the only general-population 100m data we found, and it covers boys only.
  • For high school we used Oregon's state-meet standards. Oregon publishes fully automatic standards for six school-size classes, each the four-year average of fourth place, so you can see what it takes to reach a state final at the smallest and the largest schools.
  • For college and elite runners we used the 2025 NCAA Division I final, the World Athletics Championships (Tokyo 2025) entry standards, U.S. high school records and world records.
  • For the 40-yard dash we used laser-timed results from about 7,000 high school combine athletes, an electronically timed study of NCAA Division I players, and NFL Combine position averages since 2003. We found no comparable data for women.

The rater places your time in a band set by those marks, and the full ladder is shown under each result. Percentages interpolate between the AAU deciles, or use a normal distribution with a study's published mean and standard deviation. Those are estimates, and the rater labels them that way.
